Teacher: Caraher Minimum emrollment of 6.

This class will explore traditional American harmony singing. We will enjoy harmony “by ear,” learning to sing a harmony part by listening to the melody and the chords of songs. Depending on class size we can experience two-, three-, and four-part harmony singing. The songs we’ll use initially will be traditional southern gospel music and American folk songs, which lend themselves to simple harmony lines and are easy to learn. We will also do some swing tunes from early 20th century popular music. For many of the songs,  we will work with shape notes  to experience another approach to learning harmony. Shape notes are a visual aid to reading music and have been used in many rural churches and communities to teach people to read melody and harmony parts. They are a part of the American rural gospel singing tradition. For those who have always wanted to enjoy contributing a harmony part to group singing, this class will enable you to sing out! in harmony. Other genres can be explored as students contribute ideas.

Workshops

Jo Gaston leading watercolor workshop at Arts Center

Acclaimed artist Jo Gaston will conduct a watercolor workshop on Saturday, Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 12entitled “Creating Dynamic Watercolors with Three Cs” for intermediate to advanced artists at the Randolph County Community Arts Center. The cost is $125 (with a 20 percent discount for RCCAC members). The workshop will be held in the Great Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

An art educator for more than 20 years, Gaston received her bachelor’s degree in art from Missouri State University and her master’s degree from The Colorado College. A resident of Colorado Springs, Colo., she creates watercolors of ranch and garden subjects she has known since childhood. The realistic details of her paintings make her subjects easily recognizable. While presenting subjects realistically, however, she uses light and color freely to intensify her impressions of the abstract forms inherent in those subjects.

Her work has been shown in many regional and national juried shows such as the Grand National Rodeo Celebration of Western Art - San Francisco, Texas Watercolor Society International Exhibition, and the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club Exhibition – New York.

She is a member of both the American Watercolor Society (AWS) and the National Watercolor Society (NWS) and a past president of the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society and a signature member of the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society, the Kansas Watercolor Society, and the Northwest Watercolor Society.

The Randolph County Community Arts Center will present its ninth annual Gala Juried Art Exhibition Sept. 10-29. The Gala Opening Reception will be Friday, Sept. 10 from 6-10 p.m. at the Arts Center.

This year’s Gala Exhibit and workshop is sponsored by the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, located on the Beverly Five Lane - South of Elkins.  ERCC is a non-profit organization dedicated to nursing home services for both skilled and intermediate care residents.
