Adult Multi Media Arts Classes and Workshops

Fly Tying

Mondays – Begins Oct. 10                                6:00 - 8:00

Older Teens and Adults                                    $65

Teacher: Bleigh

Join Marc Bleigh for this weekly exploration of Fly Tying. Bleigh will lead discussion and demonstrations of fly tying techniques for the advanced-beginning tyer to the advanced tyer.  The class will focus on the exchange of ideas / techniques and participants are encouraged to bring their ideas and questions concerning fly tying to each class.  New materials and techniques, along with the old favorites, will be demonstrated.  Participants should have their own vise and tools if possible. If participants need vise and tools, Bleigh can provide those with advance notice.   Materials for tying various patterns will be provided. Class meets October 10, 17, 24, 31 and Nov. 7, 14. Some fly tying experience needed.

Scherenschnitt  - An Introduction to Traditional Paper Cut Silhouettes

Artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy will introduce students to the traditional paper cut techniques of Scherenschnitt. Students may choose existing patterns or create their own designs. In addition, students may choose to work in the traditional format of black paper mounted on white board or may choose to work with colored paper mounted on white or colored board. Traditional Scherenschnitt has been used in many cultures worldwide and has expanded into an art form appreciated around the world.

Beginning Basket Weaving Class I

Students will join basket maker Lara Lawrence for a beginning exploration into basket weaving.  Student will explore the history of basket weaving, the various materials used in basket weaving and their preparation as well as decoration and embellishment techniques.  Students will develop their weaving techniques with each class and resource information will be provided so students can continue to pursue their new interest as far as they like!  Students will complete one basket at each class.  Projects will include a muffin / bread basket, counter basket, and country jar lamp. All supplies are included and students will finish class with three completed baskets.  Class will meet Sept. 15, 22 and 29.

Fall Basket Class

Students will join basket maker Lara Lawrence for a beginning exploration into basket weaving with a fall flare!  Student will explore the history of basket weaving, the various materials used in basket weaving and their preparation as well as decoration and embellishment techniques.  Students will develop their weaving techniques with each class and resource information will be provided so students can continue to pursue their new interest as far as they like!  Students will complete one woven holiday project at each class.  Projects will include a woven reed wreath, decorative Indian corn, woven reed pumpkin.  All supplies are included and student will finish class with three fully completed projects.  Class will meet Sept. 15, 22 and 29.

Saturday Basket Workshop: Country Pie Carrier

Join basket maker Lara Lawrence for this one-day workshop featuring a country pie carrier.  Students will weave a pie basket complete with wood handle and base.  In addition, Lawrence will discuss the history of basket weaving, the various materials used in basket weaving and their preparation, as well as decoration and embellishment techniques.  Students will develop their weaving techniques and resource information will be provided so students can continue to pursue their new interest as far as they like!   All supplies are included.

Tulip Poplar and Hickory Bark Baskets

Saturday, October 1                                          10:00 - noon and 1:00 - 3:00.

Older Teens and Adults                                    $30

Teacher: Henderson

Students will join artist Leslie Henderson in this Bark Basket workshop.   Henderson did the hard work and harvested the bark for these beautiful baskets in May and June! Using Tulip Poplar and Hickory bark, students will create unique and primitive containers bringing nature into their home in a beautiful and useful way. Students should be able to finish two and possibly three baskets during this one-day workshop. Henderson will bring supplies to share as well.  Class will break at noon for a potluck lunch so please bring a favorite dish to share.

Students will join basket maker Lara Lawrence for a beginning exploration into basket weaving with a holiday flare!  Student will explore the history of basket weaving, the various materials used in basket weaving and their preparation as well as decoration and embellishment techniques.  Students will develop their weaving techniques with each class and resource information will be provided so students can continue to pursue their new interest as far as they like!  Students will complete one woven holiday project at each class.  Projects will include a door basket, lighted Christmas basket and Christmas snowflakes.  All supplies are included and student will finish class with three fully completed projects.  Class will meet Oct. 13, 20 and 27.

Saturday Basket Workshop: Catch All Basket

Farmer's Market Class – End of the Season!

Teacher: Helzer

Join Helzer for a Saturday foray into the Elkins Farmers Market.  Using fresh garden delights and artisan breads and cheese, Helzer will help students turn their finds into creative, delicious dishes. Students are welcome to supplement their purchases with their own home grown produce.  Focus on healthy cooking and organic, locally produced products. Students will meet Helzer at the Farmer's Market at 9:00 for a thirty-minute market tour followed by class at the Arts Center.  Helzer will demo cold pack techniques for tomato sauces, peppers, and other canned goodies. Students should bring cutting board and knives or any garden products of their own.

Life Drawing

Drawing Portraits

Teacher: Ferguson

Students will join artist Sarah Ferguson for an introduction to portrait drawing. You will begin by creating a step-by-step portrait together, in order to learn about proper proportions. You will also learn about shading, and creating different facial expressions through drawing faces from real life and photographs. This class is for all levels of students. This class will be taught as a beginning class, but students will be helped individually as they work, so instruction will be tailored to the skill level of the student. Classes will meet on Sept. 14, 21, 28, Oct. 12, 19, and 26.  No class Forest Festival week.

Discoveries in Water Media

Wednesdays, Oct. 12, 19 and 26                     9:00 - 3:00

Teacher: Waddell

Waddell will help students create, in a project format, experimental works in water media on paper.  The real and abstract essence of nature will be explored.  Multiple and richly layered paint surfaces will suggest flowers, trees, rocks, water and walls.  Various media will be utilized to create these surfaces.   Media will include watercolor, inks, dyes and acrylic paints.  Collage will also be integrated into the designs. Organic and geometric forms will be interchanged in order to create a meaningful, cohesive piece of art.  Composition, design, value and color will be emphasized.   Some topics to be explored include collage, starts, poured surfaces, grids, altered surfaces, transfers, scraping, atomizers, finishings and strata painting.

Music and Dance Classes for Children, Teens and Adults

Beginning Guitar

Explore the possibilities of fingerstyle guitar with Wayne Rowand. The class will focus on instrumental guitar music played with a classical technique. Students will learn notation in the first position of the guitar, fundamental rhythms, proper techniques and musicianship through the use of music from around the world. The class will be structured as an ensemble with each student having the opportunity to play both melody and chordal accompaniment, culminating in a public performance by the ensemble. 12-week class. Maximum enrollment of 8 students.

Beginning Dulcimer  - The Basics

Join Luanna Moore for this Beginning Mountain Lap Dulcimer class geared for the truly beginning students who have little or no previous experience with the lap dulcimer. Students will learn basic strumming, how to tune a dulcimer, and basic chords for accompaniment. In addition, students will be exposed to learning various playing styles and tunes using basic dulcimer number tablature as well as by ear and by note. By the end of the first class, students will be able to play a few simple tunes! Instrument rental available from teacher for $10 with $40 security deposit.  Limit of 10 students.

Dulcimer Tunes and Techniques

Join Luanna Moore for this lap dulcimer class geared for beginning through advanced musicians. Students will learn to play waltzes, fiddle tunes, gospel, folk and Irish/Scottish, and local jam tunes.   In addition, students will learn basic lap dulcimer tab – both by ear and note - strumming, tuning, basic chords for embellishments and accompaniment in groups as well as several simple tunes and playing in different keys. Students will continue developing right and left hand techniques. Students do not need to be able to read music but should be able to tune their dulcimer and play a few simple tunes.  Instrument rental available from teacher for $10 with $40 security deposit.  Limit of 10 students.

Lab Band Acoustic

Teen lab band is a chance for students to express themselves through various musical styles in a small group setting with personalized instruction. This ensemble is open to students in grades 5 - 12 that sing or play an instrument (any instrument) and have the desire to learn and create. So grab your guitar, trumpet, banjo, accordion, drums, or anything else that makes music and sign up today! Musician Seth Young is the Lab Band director. He will be joined throughout the session by guest musicians and teachers.  Classes begin on Sept. 28 and run through Dec. 7.  No class Oct. 5 (Forest Festival) or Nov. 23 (Thanksgiving week).  Special rehearsal Dec. 6 from 4:30 - 5:30. Fall Festival of the Bands will be Dec. 7 at the Arts Center! Non-refundable payment of $40 due with registration.  Balance of $40 due at Oct. 26 class.   20% discount  ($64 for all 10 classes) if paid in full at registration.  Student should bring his or her own instrument.

Pottery Classes for Adults

Beverage Vessels

This class is a focused study of the pottery vessels used for the containment of various drinks and libations. Through wheel throwing and hand-building we will examine historical and contemporary approaches to bottles, pitchers, flasks, jugs, thermoses, coffee pots, and decanters. Students should have experience in pottery. Classes will meet Sept. 19, 26, Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24. Maximum enrollment of 6 students.

Hand and Wheel Pottery for Adults

Beginning students can learn the fundamentals of hand building and throwing on the potter’s wheel, including centering, raising the wall, thinning, shaping, and trimming.  Intermediate students will refine their throwing / building skills and learn new finishing techniques to bring their pottery to a higher level.  Experienced pottery students will have the opportunity to create independently. Maximum enrollment of 6 students.

Advanced Wheel Throwing

Take your pottery to the next level by learning how to throw and alter forms, combine forms, and enhance your technical proficiency on the wheel. A concentration on aesthetics, composition, concept, and craftsmanship will be maintained throughout the term as you learn to develop your voice in pottery. Students should have experience in pottery. 12-week class session (36 hours with the teacher in the studio!) starting Sept. 17 and ending Dec. 12.  No class Oct. 8 (MSFF) OR Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving.) $150 deposit due at registration.  Two additional payments of $75 due on Oct. 1 and Nov. 5. 10% discount if paid in full at registration. Maximum enrollment of 5 students.

Introduction to Wheel Throwing

This class is for students with little to no experience working on the wheel. Learn the fundamental skills of making wheel-thrown pottery and working with clay as well as basic approaches to surface-decoration and glazing. 6-week class session starting Sept. 17 and ending Oct. 29.  No class Oct. 8, Forest Festival Week. Maximum enrollment of 4 students.

Preschoolers and their parents will discover how much fun it is to read and create through this multimedia arts class with art teacher Sarah Ferguson. Children and their parents will enjoy art projects, rhymes, games, music and movement all based on children's books. There will be a color theme each week, so that students can learn all about the different colors. Classes will meet on Sept. 14, 21, 28, Oct. 12, 19, and 26.  No class Forest Festival week.

Young artists with the help of their caregivers will develop fine motor skills and a curiosity about the textural world around them by capturing textures on an art walk. Once back in the classroom they will develop their scissor skills to cut their rubbings into shapes or stripes and glue their pieces into a collaged artwork.

The Happy Birthday Series:  Louise Nevelson

Join us as we celebrate the birthday of this famous artist in The Happy Birthday Series!  In September we wish Happy Birthday to Louise Nevelson.  Nevelson was born in the Ukraine, Russia in 1899 and, moved to Rockland, Maine when she was just three years old. Nevelson is known for her abstract expressionist use of found objects or everyday discarded things in her “assemblages,” one of which was three stories high.  According to Nevelson,  "When you put together things that other people have thrown out, you’re really bringing them to life – a spiritual life that surpasses the life for which they were originally created." Nevelson often worked in shallow-relief and often in one color. This class will include a story about the artist as well as a multimedia project created in the theme of Nevelson. Pre registration required.  Maximum enrollment of 8 so register early!

Students will learn the Arashi Shibori technique of resist dyeing and its role in history. They will also have the opportunity to upcycle one of their own old favorite T-shirts into a T-shirt bag and wearable art.  Classes will meet on Sept.15, 22, and 29.

The Happy Birthday Series: Faith Ringgold

Join RCCAC art teacher Beth King as we celebrate the birthday of this famous artist in The Happy Birthday Series!  In October we wish Happy Birthday to Faith Ringgold. Ringgold was born and raised in Harlem and educated at the City College of New York.  She was greatly influenced by the fabric of her own mother, a fashion designer, and has used fabric in many of her artworks. She is especially well known for her painted story quilts which combine painting, quilted fabric, and storytelling. This class will include a story about the artist as well as a multimedia project created in the theme of Ringgold.  Pre registration required.  Maximum enrollment of 8 so register early!

Depicting our Watery World

Students will study depictions of water throughout art history from Japanese Wood Block prints, Monet's Water Lilies to Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Waters in this three-week class. Students will learn how to depict water while using a variety of techniques including, watercolor, tempera paint, graphite and collage.   Class will meet October 13,20, and 27.

Season of Leaves

Young artists will explore leaves and their transition through autumn as a subject matter in this three-week class. Students will utilize a variety of media and styles incorporating painting, drawing, collage and more while informally introducing the elements and principles of design through the changing environment of Elkins in autumn.  Classes will meet October 13,20, and 27

Great Gourds! Workshop for Children

Saturday, October 22                                    10:00 - noon

Kindergarten and up.                                   $20

Teacher: Henderson

Young artists will join artist Leslie Henderson in this Great Gourds! workshop and create a jack-o’-lantern style pumpkin from a gourd. Using permanent markers and paints, students will decorate and embellish the gourd which may well become a family heirloom since they will last long past Halloween. Adults are welcome to attend the workshop as well.  Henderson notes, "We will use permanent markers and paints, so please wear old clothes!"

Student will learn about the history, development, and symbolism of Petroglyphs throughout ancient and modern cultures. They will create their own Petroglyph paperweight while learning about line and contrast.

Forest Festival Time: Hand Building Basics for Children

Children will learn or continue to develop clay hand building skills while paying tribute to this colorful, exciting season by making pumpkin and turkey candle holders, Halloween decor, leaf and acorn-decorated plates and cups, as well as creating pieces from their own imaginations. Five week session running Sept. 13 - Oct. 11.

Fun on the Wheel for Children!

Children get the opportunity to learn how to make pottery on the wheel! A safe and controlled environment will be maintained while the children get the unique chance to have fun, express themselves, and get very messy while making are with this wonderful machine. Maximum enrollment of 6 students.

Wandering Lines

Students will join artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy as they learn different media and techniques of using lines in both art and craft projects. Media and techniques explored will include continuous line drawings, paper manipulation creating lines, paper weaving, cardboard loom weaving, and 4 harness floor loom weaving.
