Adult Multi Media Arts Classes and Workshops

Creating Old World Santas

Mondays                                                12:00 - 2:00

Teens and Adults                                   $80

Teacher: Ferguson

Students will create their own Santa sculptures using Sculpey oven bake clay, wire, aluminum foil, felt, wool, etc. Students will create their own armatures out of wire and build their Santa's body out of foil, and quilt batting. The hands and faces will be sculpted out of clay, and the eyes will be hand painted. The students will also be able to make an outfit for their Santa, with a choice to either sew the outfit or make a no-sew outfit. If time allows other handmade sculpture techniques will be shown. This is a wonderful opportunity to create priceless holiday keepsakes, while learning new art building techniques. Class will meet Nov. 7, 14, 21, 28, Dec. 5, and 12. Class will not meet Thanksgiving week.

Simple Printmaking

Saturday, November 12                       9:00 - 12:00 and 1:00 - 4:00 with lunch break

Older Teens and Adults                        $40

Teacher: Rhudy

Students will join artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy to learn different techniques of simple printmaking that can be used to make greeting cards and framed art. Printmaking processes explored will include rubbings, Styrofoam printing, cardboard printing, monoprinting, and linoleum cut printing. Students will take home several prints from each technique. No previous printmaking experience needed.

German Christmas Ornament Workshop

Saturday, December 10                        9:00 - 12:00 and 1:00 - 3:00 with lunch break

Older Teens and Adults                        $20

Teacher: Rhudy

Learn to create delicate foil Christmas ornaments - cut, folded, curled and woven - with Elkins artist Maggi Rhudy. Students will learn to create heirloom ornaments and have enough materials to finish a set of each at home.  Rhudy has been making these ornaments since her childhood in Germany. “I love making things and always try to learn new techniques.  But when it comes to Christmas decorations, I love to fall back on traditions.”

Felted Christmas Ornaments for Adults

Teacher: Henderson

Students will join artist Leslie Henderson as they make felted ornaments for the holidays. Using a variety of hand felted materials, students will create mostly hand sewn heirloom ornaments that reflect their own personal style. Henderson notes, "The felt will already be made but if you want to learn how to make the felt you are welcome to register for children's class in the morning session."

Holiday Appetizers and Hors d'ouevres

Join Helzer for this workshop designed to help students learn the perfect garnishments and presentation for finger foods, appetizers, and hors d'oeuvres.  Helzer will demonstrate a variety of scrumptious treats.  Students will learn and practice a variety of garnishment and presentation techniques to make their holiday platters a perfect success. Students should bring knives, cutting boards, a paring knife, and any favorite specialty tools.

Teacher: Proudfoot-Payne

Students will join artist and teacher Kylie Proudfoot Payne for an introduction to the basics of drawing as they explore the many ways to use pencil and charcoal to represent and express their ideas. Students will learn to draw from observation using line, gesture, shape, value and texture and develop skills to draw objects in proportion and perspective. 5 week class meeting Nov.10, 17 and Dec. 1, 8 and 15.

Tempera Resist Painting / Stain Glass Effect

November 14 – 18, weeklong workshop                  9:00 - noon

Older Teens and Adults                                                $80

Students will join artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy, well known for her beautiful tempera resist works, as they explore the technique of tempera resist painting to create a painting with a beautiful stain glass appearance.  Students will plan their image using a simple line drawing with mostly large shapes. Rhudy will demonstrate techniques of tempera paint and ink application. Students will complete at least one painting in the weeklong workshop. No drawing or painting experience is necessary.

Basketry Classes and Workshops

Harvest Basket / Bowl Workshop

Saturday, November 12                                  10:00 - noon and 1:00 - 3:00.

Older Teens and Adults                                    $50

Teacher: Henderson

Students will join artists Leslie Henderson as they create a Harvest Basket / Bowl for their holiday table. This special reed basket with wood base will be perfect for serving bread.  Complete with natural embellishments, and no handle, this would also be a great gift item. Students should wear old clothes and, if possible, bring strong scissors, a small flat head screw driver, a leather hole punch, an old towel, and a 2 gallon bucket. Henderson will bring supplies to share as well.  Class will break at noon for a potluck lunch so please bring a favorite dish to share!

Saturday Basket Workshop: Quilt / Picnic Basket

Join basket maker Lara Lawrence for this one day workshop featuring a Quilt / Picnic Basket.  Students will weave a basket with wood bottom and handles just perfect for storing a special quilt or for filling with goodies for a special picnic.  In addition, Lawrence will discuss the history of basket weaving, the various materials used in basket weaving and their preparation as well as decoration and embellishment techniques.  Students will develop their weaving techniques and resource information will be provided so students can continue to pursue their new interest as far as they like!   All supplies are included.

Join basket maker Lara Lawrence for this one-day workshop featuring a Woven Tote.  Students will weave a large tote complete with Shaker tape handles, perfect for carrying to a ball game, parade or craft class.  In addition, Lawrence will discuss the history of basket weaving, the various materials used in basket weaving and their preparation as well as decoration and embellishment techniques.  Students will develop their weaving techniques and resource information will be provided so students can continue to pursue their new interest as far as they like!   All supplies are included.

Music and Dance Classes for Children, Teens and Adults

Songs of the Seasons for Mountain (Lap and Hammered) Dulcimer

Tuesdays                                                        6:30 - 8:00

Join musician and teacher Luanna Moore for an introduction to seasonal tunes on the Lap Dulcimer and the Hammered Dulcimer.  Students will learn to play a variety of seasonal tunes and experience playing in a group using chords, harmonies and rounds.   Students will be exposed to melody and chord playing techniques, left hand techniques such as hammering on, and will practice strumming variations.  A beginning student who can strum and read numbered tab on the Mountain Dulcimer should have no trouble learning to play the basic melodies. A beginning Hammered Dulcimer student who can find the scale in the key of D should be able to learn the tunes.   Chords and some harmonies will be presented for more advanced players. Class will include several traditional tunes, newer tunes as well as tunes not taught in previous classes.   Instrument rental available from teacher. Lap Dulcimers $10 with $40 security deposit and Hammered Dulcimers $30 with $50 security deposit.

Pottery Classes for Adults

Dinnerware

This class will teach you how to throw and hand-build the pottery components that make-up an encompassing and cohesive dinnerware set. From plates to butter dishes, learn how to conceive and design the forms necessary to create a unique and unified table setting. Students should have experience in pottery. Please note this class meets 3 hours each time. 6 week class session starting Nov. 7.  No class Nov. 21 (Thanksgiving). Maximum enrollment of 6 students.

Hand and Wheel Pottery for Adults

Beginning students can learn the fundamentals of hand building and throwing on the potter’s wheel, including centering, raising the wall, thinning, shaping, and trimming.  Intermediate students will refine their throwing / building skills and learn new finishing techniques to bring their pottery to a higher level.  Experienced pottery students will have the opportunity to create independently. Five Week Session running Nov. 3 - Dec. 8. Maximum enrollment of 6 students.

Advanced Wheel Throwing

Older Teens/Adults w/ pottery experience           $150 (18 hours of instruction and supplies)

Take your pottery to the next level by learning how to throw and alter forms, combine forms and enhance your technical proficiency on the wheel. A concentration on aesthetics, composition, concept and craftsmanship will be maintained throughout the term as you learn to develop your voice in pottery. Students should have experience in pottery. 12-week class session starting Sept. 17 and ending Dec. 12.  No class Oct. 8 (Forest Festival week) OR Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving.) $150 deposit due at registration.  Two additional payments of $75 due on Oct. 1 and Nov. 5. 10% discount if paid in full at registration. Maximum enrollment of 5 students.

Introduction to Wheel Throwing

This class is for students with little to no experience working on the wheel. Learn the fundamental skills of making wheel-thrown pottery and working with clay as well as basic approaches to surface-decoration and glazing. Please note this class meets for 3 hours each class. Classes will meet Nov. 5, 12, 19, Dec. 3, 10 and 17. No class Thanksgiving week.  Maximum enrollment of 4 students.

Preschoolers and their parents will love this active, creative class. Preschoolers will get to explore finger painting, sculpting, making beads, drawing in sand, scribbling and drawing with crayons, markers and chalk, making bubble prints, creating a “zooming wheels” print, and much more in this multimedia extravaganza. The Happy Birthday Series: Claude Monet

Join RCCAC art teacher Beth King as we celebrate the birthday of this famous artist in The Happy Birthday Series!  In November, we wish Happy Birthday to Claude Monet born in Paris, France, on November 14, 1840.  Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting and the most prolific artist of the movement.  He painted directly from nature, revealing that even on the gloomiest of days, an infinite number of colors can and do exist.  Young artists will adopt his approach to color and his short brushstrokes techniques to create their paintings. This class will include a story about the artist as well as a multimedia project created in the theme of Monet. Pre registration required.  Maximum enrollment of 8 so register early!

Drawing, Doodling and Defining your World through Line

Young artists will explore artist and teacher Kylie Proudfoot Payne as they explore the basics of drawing and learn to draw what they see.  This class is designed for students who love art and are ready to give their drawing skills a boost - while having fun in a no-pressure environment.  Simple perspective, shading, proportion, and line drawing are just a few of the areas that will be explored with the use of a variety of drawing materials such as pencil, marker, pen, pastel, charcoal and more! Class meets Nov.10, 17 and Dec. 1.

Splashes of Color

While painting and playing with color, young artists will explore the color wheel, basic properties of color, warm and cool colors, tints, shades, color mixing and how color is used in art. Join RCCAC art teacher Beth King as we celebrate the birthday of this famous artist in The Happy Birthday Series!  In December we wish Happy Birthday to Wasilly Kandinsky.  Wasilly Kandinsky, known as the father of abstract art, was a Russian painter whose early works are considered the first abstract paintings.  Kandinsky had a law career in Moscow until he opted for art school in Munich in 1896—when he was almost 30—and quickly made a name for himself with his dazzling watercolors, geometric shapes, and use of brilliant colors.  This class will include a story about the artist as well as a multimedia project created in the theme of Kandinsky. Pre registration required.  Maximum enrollment of 8 so register early!

Felted Christmas Ornaments for Children

Children will join artist Leslie Henderson as they make felted ornament for the holidays. Students will learn wet felting and dying techniques. These ornaments also make great gifts.  Students should wear old clothes and expect to get a little wet!  Adults are welcome to attend this class as well - just remember it is geared for young artists!

Cookies for Christmas: Cooking Class for Children

Future bakers and their parent can kick off the holiday baking season with Derrick Helzer in this Cookies for Christmas workshop.   Cooks will learn a traditional sugar cookie dough recipe as they shape, bake, and embellish their creations. Each participant will leave with a plate of decorated cookies!   Students should bring a hand mixer, measuring spoons, rolling pin, utensils and two mixing bowls.  Get the future baker in your family off to a festive start. Enrollment limited to 6 children with parents. Maximum enrollment of 6 students.

Join RCCAC art teacher Beth King as we celebrate the birthday of this famous artist in The Happy Birthday Series!  In January we wish Happy Birthday to Claes Oldenburg.  Oldenburg, a Swedish sculptor and a leading figure in the Pop Art movement, is best known for his public art installations typically featuring very large replicas of everyday objects, blending reality and fantasy.  In 1976, Oldenburg created a 45-foot-tall sculpture in the form of a Clothespin in downtown Philadelphia. This class will include a story about the artist as well as a multimedia project created in the theme of Oldenburg.  Pre registration required.  Maximum enrollment of 8 so register early!

Here Comes Santa Claus: Clay Hand Building Basics for Children

Children will learn or continue to develop clay hand building skills while creating holiday decorations and gifts.  Plates and cups for Santa's cookies, snowmen, Christmas trees and ornaments are just a few of the items that children will create as a part of celebrating this joyous season.  Five Week Session running Nov. 1 - Dec. 6.  No class Nov. 22.

Fun on the Wheel for Children!

Children get the opportunity to learn how to make pottery on the wheel! A safe and controlled environment will be maintained while the children get the unique chance to have fun, express themselves and get very messy while making art with this wonderful machine.  5week class session. Classes meet on Nov. 11, 18, Dec. 2, 9, and 16.  No class Nov. 25 (Thanksgiving). Maximum enrollment of 6 students.
