Drawing and Painting Classes for Teens and Adults
Watercolor Explorations: Painting Landscapes

In this workshop students will discover how to create a watercolor landscape. Students will learn how to create a successful composition, build the landscape from background to foreground, build layers of paint, mix colors, and add contrast and detail. Students will also learn many brush techniques as they work on their paintings. Students can learn how to paint, or simply improve their skills in this fun workshop. All levels are welcome.
Discoveries in Water Media

Teacher: Waddell
Join artists Ken Waddell for an exploration of a variety of water media. Waddell will help students create, in a project format, experimental works in water media on paper. The real and abstract essence of nature will be explored. Multiple and richly layered paint surfaces will suggest flowers, trees, rocks, water and walls. Various media will be utilized to create these surfaces. Media will include watercolor, inks, dyes and acrylic paints. Collage will also be integrated into the designs. Organic and geometric forms will be interchanged in order to create a meaningful, cohesive piece of art. Composition, design, value and color will be emphasized. Some topics to be explored include collage, starts, poured surfaces, grids, altered surfaces, transfers, scraping, atomizers, finishings and strata painting. Students who have previously taken this class will be challenged with all new projects. Limited enrollment of 8.

This class is an introduction to drawing techniques for adults wanting to learn to draw and enhance their drawing skills. This is the second phase of adult drawing, in which we will examine and implement drawing techniques with more examination of the Master works. We will explore the many ways that pencil and charcoal can be manipulated into representational art. You will learn how to draw from life using line, texture and value while developing the use of perspective. (The “I CAN Draw” classes do not have to be taken consecutively.) Five-week class meeting March 15, 22, 29, April 5,and 12.

Leather Crafting

Join leather crafter Richard Bear Ware for an introduction to the basic skills of leather working. Students will complete one belt and one wallet as they learn about the preparation of leather, tooling, stamping, and the dying/finishing process. All supplies are included in the cost of the tuition and students will keep the poundo board, mallet, needle, and two stamps for their future work.

Decorating Gourds: Bunnies, Baskets, Bowls and Birdhouses

Dried gourds make beautiful and unique baskets, bowls and birdhouses. Join artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy as she shows students how to clean and prepare gourds to create one-of-a-kind containers, birdhouses and Easter decorations for display or practical use. Rhudy will demonstrate many techniques including painting, wood burning, and adding a variety of materials. She will have many examples and illustrations to inspire the students in their creations. Gourds and all embellishments are supplied, but students are invited to bring additional embellishments if they like. Students may bring their own clean gourds or use gourds she provides. Limit of 10 students, $5 discount if student supplies their own gourds!
Scherenschnitt - An Introduction to Traditional Paper Cut Silhouettes

Artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy will introduce students to the traditional paper cut techniques of Scherenschnitt. Students may choose existing patterns or create their own designs. In addition, students may choose to work in the traditional format of black paper mounted on white board or may choose to work with colored paper mounted on white or colored board. Traditional Scherenschnitt has been used in many cultures worldwide and has expanded into an art form appreciated around the world.
Beginning Origami

Join artist Akiko Endo for an Origami workshop. In the Japanese language, the character “o ri” stands for folding and the character “ka mi” or “ga mi” stands for paper. Beginning students will learn how to make a number of traditional simple objects and to practice basic folding patterns. Maximum enrollment of 8 students. Endo will present different Origami projects in each class. Register and pay for all three Beginning Origami classes and receive a 20% discount. Origami workshops are on February 11, March 10, (see winter listings) and April 14.
Simple Printmaking
Saturday, April 28 9:00 - 12:00 and 1:00 - 4:00 with lunch break

Students will join artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy to learn different techniques of simple printmaking that can be used to make greeting cards and framed art. Printmaking processes explored will include rubbings, Styrofoam printing, cardboard printing, monoprinting, and small linoleum cut printing. Students will take home several prints from each technique.

Preschoolers and their parents will discover how much fun it is to read and create through this multimedia arts class with art teacher Sarah Ferguson. Children and their parents will enjoy art projects, rhymes, games, music and movement all based on Dr. Seuss books. There will be a theme each week, and all activities will be based on that specific book theme. Titles include: The Cat in the Hat, Fox in Socks, Green Eggs and Ham, Wacky Wednesday, Dr. Seuss's ABCs and many more.

Hands On! 3D Sculpture Experience

Join artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy for a sampler of 3-dimensional sculpture techniques including relief sculpture (soap and plaster of paris), paper sculpture, wire sculptures, and paper mache.

Make it Pop!

Journey through the 20th century of Pop Art and discover the works of Pop Art masters such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, and George Segal to name a few. Young artists will look at these avant-garde works and use them as an inspiration for developing their own creativity. An overview of the history and controversy of Pop Art as well as its effects on our culture today will be included as students study and create in the style of each of these contemporary counterparts!

Celebrate Earth Day!

Artist Leslie Gordon is a Forester at heart so trees are her favorite subject so come celebrate Earth Day with a tree theme. Children will join Gordon as they create recycled works of art using paper, cardboard, wood, and more to decorate their home and garden. Lots of paint, glue, and dirt with a healthy dose of Earth Science along the way. Please wear washable clothes and prepared to get a bit messy!

Join us as we celebrate the birthday of this famous artist in The Happy Birthday Series! In May we wish Happy Birthday to Salvador Dalí born on May 11, 1904! Dalí, a prominent Spanish surrealist painter, was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in 1931. Dalí's expansive artistic repertoire includes film, sculpture, and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media. Led by one of the Arts Center's art education teachers, this class will include a story about the artist as well as a multimedia project created in the theme of Dalí. Pre registration required. Maximum enrollment of 8 so register early!

Fun with Fingerstyle Guitar / Beginning Guitar

Explore the possibilities of fingerstyle guitar with Wayne Rowand. The class will focus on instrumental guitar music played with a classical technique. Students will learn notation in the first position of the guitar, fundamental rhythms, proper techniques, and musicianship through the use of music from around the world. The class will be structured as an ensemble with each student having the opportunity to play both melody and chordal accompaniment, culminating in a public performance by the ensemble.

Teen lab band is a chance for students to express themselves through various musical styles in a small group setting with personalized instruction. This ensemble is open to students in grades 5 - 12 that sing or play an instrument (any instrument) and have the desire to learn and create. So grab your guitar, trumpet, banjo, accordion, drums, or anything else that makes music and sign up today! Musician Seth Young is the Lab Band director. He will be joined throughout the session by guest musicians and teachers! Classes begin on February 7 and run through April 17. No class spring break week unless school is in session. Spring Festival of the Bands will be April 19 at the Arts Center!
Keys to Music

“Keys to Music “ is a music “theory” class for the student who wants a deeper understanding of how music is created and how it relates to the world around them. Participants will have the opportunity to explore multiple styles and genres, as they master the concepts needed to become a complete musician. “Keys to Music” is a nonperforming music class, but is essential for anyone who wishes to perform music at the best of their ability. Taught by Lab Band director Seth Young, this course is designed to expand on the topics and themes introduced in the band lab. This course is open to all 6-12 grade students. All experience levels are welcome! Instruction will be individualized, giving all participants the opportunity to create, explore, and understand. Open to all musicians. Strongly encouraged for Lab Band participants. Class begins on February 2 and runs 9 weeks.

Take your pottery to the next level by learning how to throw and alter forms, combine forms and enhance your technical proficiency on the wheel. Detailed demonstrations will be given. Majolica - An Introduction

Try your hands at working with low-fire red earthenware clay and allow your painterly side to flourish as well. Students will learn the techniques as well as the history of Majolica. Majolica has a unique glazing process that allows artists to easily transfer their two-dimensional painting abilities over to the three-dimensional realm in order to create unique and vibrant pottery; comparable to the effects you would see in a watercolor painting. 6-week class session - 18 hours with the teacher in the studio!
