Children’s Multi Media Arts Classes and Workshops
Get Into Line!
Tuesdays 4:00 - 5:30
4th grade to high school $50

Students will join artist and teacher Maggi Rhudy as they learn different media and techniques of using lines in both art and craft projects. Media and techniques explored will include continuous line drawings, paper manipulation, creating lines, paper weaving, cardboard loom weaving, and four-harness floor loom weaving. Class will meet for six weeks beginning February 7.
African Art
Wednesdays 4:15 - 5:15

Hujambo! Join us for a journey through the art and cultures of Africa! During our six week visit we will create our own African art, examine objects from everyday African life, listen to a mix of music from Africa, learn games from a few of the many cultures, and taste a few traditional African foods. An overview of the history of African art and its amazing cultures will be incorporated and a wealth of visual materials will surround us. Six-week class meeting February 1, 15, 22, 29, March 7, and 14. Class will not meet on February 8.
A Study of Sketchbooks
Thursdays (February 2, 9, and 16) 5:30 - 6:30
Kindergarten - 5th grades $30

Young artists will explore the traditional and contemporary uses of sketchbooks through study and reflection of the examples of Masters. By the conclusion of the class students will compile and bind their own sketchbook to take home. Three-week class meeting February 2, 9, and 16.
Transforming T-shirts
Thursdays (February 23, March 1, and 8) 4:15 - 5:15
Kindergarten - 5th grades $30
Teacher: Proudfoot-Payne
Young artists will explore the variety of ways to cut, sew, bind, braid, form and paint a T-shirt in order to transform it into an art media. Students will have the opportunity to transform T-shirts of their own that may be too small or no longer used into T-shirt bags, Art Aprons, Jewelry, sculpture, and more.
Three week class meeting February 23, March 1, and 8.
A Clinic in Collage

While painting and playing with the elements of art, student artists will explore collage and its history. They will use a variety of techniques and materials to create different collages while studying Master examples. Three week class meeting February 23, March 1, and 8.
The Happy Birthday Series! Happy Birthday: Grant Wood

Join us as we celebrate the birthday of this famous artist in The Happy Birthday Series! In February we wish Happy Birthday to Grant DeVolson Wood born on February 13, 1891! Wood was an American painter, born in Anamosa, Iowa and best known for his paintings depicting the rural American Midwest, particularly the painting “American Gothic.” Led by one of the Arts Center's art education teachers, this class will include a story about the artist as well as a multimedia project created in the theme of Wood.

Join artist Akiko Endo for an Origami workshop. In the Japanese language, the character “o ri” stands for folding and the character “ka mi” or “ga mi” stands for paper. Beginning students will learn how to make a number of traditional simple objects and to practice basic folding patterns. Maximum enrollment of 5 students. Endo will present different Origami projects in each class. Register and pay for all three Beginning Origami Workshops and receive a 20% discount.

Join us as we celebrate the birthday of this famous artist in The Happy Birthday Series! In March we wish Happy Birthday to Josef Albers born in Germany on March 19, 1888! Albers, who immigrated to the United States in 1933 to teach at Black Mountain College and later at Yale University, was an accomplished designer, photographer, typographer, printmaker, and poet. Albers is best remembered for his work as an abstract painter and theorist. Most famous of all his works are the hundreds of paintings and prints that make up the series Homage to the Square. Led by one of the Arts Center's art education teachers, this class will include a story about the artist as well as a multimedia project created in the theme of Albers. Pre registration required. While continuing development of sculptural ideas, children will form their slabs, coils, and pinch pots into fabulous creations of their choice in an open studio with a self-directed setting. Beginning students can learn the fundamentals of hand building and throwing on the potter’s wheel, including centering, raising the wall, thinning, shaping, and trimming. Intermediate students will refine their throwing / building skills and learn new finishing techniques to bring their pottery to a higher level. Experienced pottery students will have the opportunity to create independently. Limited enrollment of 6.

Drawing and Painting Classes for Teens and Adults
Discoveries in Water Media

Teacher: Waddell
Join artists Ken Waddell for an exploration of a variety of water media. Waddell will help students create, in a project format, experimental works in water media on paper. The real and abstract essence of nature will be explored. Multiple and richly layered paint surfaces will suggest flowers, trees, rocks, water, and walls. Various media will be utilized to create these surfaces. Media will include watercolor, inks, dyes, and acrylic paints. Collage will also be integrated into the designs. Organic and geometric forms will be interchanged in order to create a meaningful, cohesive piece of art. Composition, design, value, and color will be emphasized. Some topics to be explored include collage, starts, poured surfaces, grids, altered surfaces, transfers, scraping, atomizers, finishings, and strata painting. Students who have previously taken this class will be challenged with all new projects. Classes meet March 7, 14, and 21. Limited enrollment of 8.
Life Drawing

This class is an introduction to drawing techniques for adults wanting to learn to draw and enhance their drawing skills. This is the second phase of adult drawing, in which we will examine and implement drawing techniques with more examination of the Master works. We will explore the many ways that pencil and charcoal can be manipulated into representational art. You will learn how to draw from life using line, texture and value while developing the use of perspective. (The “I CAN Draw” classes do not have to be taken consecutively.) Five-week class meeting March 15, 22, 29, April 5,and 12.
Imaginary Journey – Paint a Story Scroll
Saturday, March 10 9:00 - 4:00 with an hour break for lunch

Students will study and create Asian Scroll Paintings that depict travels, adventures, or everyday events. According to Rhudy, the paintings can be "realistic, abstract or anything in between. I would like this to be a fun personal exploration for each person." Rhudy will lead students on relaxing imaginary visual journeys and then demonstrate scroll-painting techniques using acrylic paints, sponges, sponge brushes, and other nontraditional tools.

Basket Classes and Workshops for Teens and Adults
Round Reed Basket Workshop
Saturday, February 11 10:00 - 3:00 with one hour break at noon
Older Teens and Adults $30
Teacher: Gordon
Join artist and basket maker Leslie Gordon and make a beautiful round reed basket or bowl to hold your valentines. This class is a great introduction to round reed work. Students will start with a woven base, twine the sides, and finish with a wicker work border. No pressure environment to learn basket basics! Students are encouraged to bring a 2-gallon bucket, an old towel, and their own basketry tools but the teacher will have extras as well. Potluck lunch break at noon!
Music Classes for Children, Teens, and Adults
Fun with Fingerstyle Guitar / Beginning Guitar

Teen lab band is a chance for students to express themselves through various musical styles in a small group setting with personalized instruction. This ensemble is open to students in grades 5 - 12 that sing or play an instrument (any instrument) and have the desire to learn and create. So grab your guitar, trumpet, banjo, accordion, drums, or anything else that makes music and sign up today! Musician Seth Young is the Lab Band director. He will be joined throughout the session by guest musicians and teachers! Classes begin on February 7 and run through April 17. No class spring break week unless school is in session. Spring Festival of the Bands will be April 19 at the Arts Center!
Keys to Music

“Keys to Music “ is a music “theory” class for the student who wants a deeper understanding of how music is created and how it relates to the world around them. Participants will have the opportunity to explore multiple styles and genres, as they master the concepts needed to become a complete musician. “Keys to Music” is a nonperforming music class, but is essential for anyone who wishes to perform music at the best of their ability. Taught by Lab Band director Seth Young, this course is designed to expand on the topics and themes introduced in the band lab. This course is open to all 6-12 grade students. All experience levels are welcome! Instruction will be individualized, giving all participants the opportunity to create, explore, and understand. Open to all musicians. Strongly encouraged for Lab Band participants. Class begins on February 2 and runs 9 weeks.

Introduction to Wheel Throwing

Join Helzer for this three-hour workshop designed to have cooks creating a festive Valentine dinner with a professional presentation. The three-course dinner menu will include an appetizer, entrée, and fabulous dessert. Everyone will help in the food preparation and enjoy the tasty creations. Helzer will tailor the dinner to fit a romantic dinner for two or a special family celebration. Participants should bring a knife, cutting board, and cameras to take picture of the presentation.
