Suzan Morgan solo exhibit opening April 29 at RCCAC
Artist Suzan Morgan will have a solo exhibition of her work entitled “Suzan Morgan, Fit to be Dyed” on display in the Maxwell Gallery of the Randolph County Community Arts Center. The opening reception will be on Friday, April 29 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The exhibit will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through June 8, with weekend hours TBA.
A Davis & Elkins College graduate with a degree in psychology, Morgan began her sewing career as a child, sewing clothes for school, then moved on to sewing traditional quilts in her twenties.
She moved to West Virginia from Baltimore, then traveled to Portland, Oregon, where she expanded into producing hand-dyed fabrics. Morgan attended the Oregon College of Art & Craft in the late 1990s, where she learned to dye and print on fabric.
She now does only contemporary fabric and textile art. “I dye and print my own fabric,” she said. “I don’t use any commercial fabrics at all.”
Morgan moved back to West Virginia at the end of the 1990s and graduated from D&E. She began selling her work in 2001.
She described her creative process: “The fabric usually comes first and then the idea comes separately. They’re two different processes, two different steps,” she said. “I make up the fabrics and hang on to them, then as the idea strikes me, I pull them out and use them in a piece.”
Morgan has exhibited her work in shows around the East Coast, including many in Ohio and West Virginia, and has been juried into Tamarack.
“My emphasis now is on creating fabric,” she said, adding that her Maxwell Gallery show will include fiber art wall hangings, as well as “fiberart books” made from fabric.
Her work can be seen at suzanmorgan.com.
