The Randolph County Community Arts Center invites all current Arts Center artist members to exhibit their work in the 2013 Member’s Exhibit. This exhibit will run from May 3rd through June 27^th.  The Arts Center will hold an opening reception on Friday, May 3rd from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Each artist may submit two original works in either two or three dimensions.

If you are interested in participating in this exhibit, please call the office at 304-637‐2355 or e‐mail us at info@randolpharts.org by April 16th to reserve your space, provide the name, medium, and size of your pieces.

If you are not currently an Arts Center artist member, visit our website, randolpharts.org, to download a form to become a member. An annual donation of $30 or more to the Arts Center provides artists with several benefits. These cover inclusion on our website’s Artist Registry, reduced entry fee for our popular Gala and Mountain State Forest Festival exhibits, participation in our annual Artist Market, and more.

Road to the Isles to Bring Music of Celtic Lochs and Glens to the Randolph County Community Arts Center

ELKINS- Road to the Isles, a six member ensemble, will bring the music and dance of the Celtic lands of old to the Randolph County Community Arts Center Saturday, March 16 for two special performances. A special Family Concert, designed for young audience members will begin at 4 p.m. The Evening Concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Drawing from a wealth of experience, Road to the Isles combines virtuoso piping, fiddling, and Irish flute playing, with championship quality Irish Step and Scottish Highland dancing to bring the traditions of Ireland and Scotland to life. Dance performances include the sword dance, highland fling, sean triubhas, Irish reel and jig, slip jig, and hornpipe, all complemented by songs, stories, and instrumental solos and duets.

The RCCAC performance will celebrate the cultural relationship shared by the Irish and Scottish people, who share many ties, as well as contrasts, in their music and dance. Road to the Isles concerts usually consist of two sets with costume changes, solos, duets, trios, and ensemble performances, with raconteur and master musician Richard Hughes serving as guide through this beautiful territory. Hughes first started playing traditional Irish music almost 50 years ago on the flute and tin whistle for dances in Pittsburgh, and he has been playing music ever since.

Hughes is joined by piper George Balderose who the New York Times described as having a "virtuoso's gift." He has studied for more than 30 years with many of the world’s great piping masters. He is an instructor, a founder, and the executive director of the Balmoral School of Piping, the foremost summer school in the USA for the learning of the bagpipes. Two exceptional fiddle players, Melinda Crawford, the 2003 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion, and Oliver Browne, outstanding Irish-born fiddler are also part of the group. Dancers Becky Craig and Cliodhna Graven represent two different traditions of dancing, and each has successfully competed at Irish Feis and Highland Games throughout the Northeast US. Their performances will highlight and contrast the dance styles of their respective traditions.

The Road to the Isles brings together the fiddle, bagpipe, and flute music, dance, and folk songs of Ireland and Scotland for a performance that breathes vibrant life into the ancient traditions of Celtic cultures. It will be the perfect way to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day.

Advance ticket prices for the Evening Concert are: $14, adults; $12, seniors; and $5, students. Tickets purchased the day of the show, or at the door, are: $16, adults; $14, seniors; and $7, students. All tickets for the 4 p.m. Family Concert are $5. Tickets can be purchased at the RCCAC office by phone at (304) 637-2355, with credit or debit card, or at the door while they last. Doors will open thirty minutes before show-time.

10th Annual Randolph County Student Art Exhibit Opens March 9th

10th Annual Randolph County Student Art Exhibit will be held in the Great Hall of the Arts Center from March 9th through April 27th. The opening reception will be on Saturday, March 9th from noon to 3:00 p.m. with the certificate presentation at 1:30.

The exhibit— sponosored by the Arts Center and ArtsBank—is always a favorite exhibit at the Arts Center! Randolph County is one of the few counties to celebrate the arts with a countywide exhibit of this magnitude. It will  include over two hundred pieces of student artwork representing students in the Randolph County Schools, the Arts Bank program, and students in Arts Center classes.

You’ll Have a Bowl! At Our 1st Annual Bowl Fest!

Sunday, March 17th, 12:30 – 3:30  •  Tickets: $25

Proceeds will help fund programs at 1 Park Street Studios. Support the Arts and your local Arts Center!  We need you! Choose your favorite hand made bowl donated by artists and Arts Center supporters! And, fill it with a fabulous soup and salad lunch served by the Arts Center volunteers — well known for a gourmet artistry of their own.

Would you like to donate a bowl in support of the 2013 Bowl Fest?  Donations are being accepted in pottery, wood, any media that can hold some soup!

Come join the fun at the Arts Center’s fundraising Mardi Gras Dinner and Dance Party on Friday, February 8th. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a buffet of authentic and delicious Cajun food prepared from traditional Louisiana recipes as well as celebratory beverages. Music and dancing will follow until 10 p.m. Proceeds from the evening benefit programming at the Arts Center.

Art Center’s volunteers will prepare traditional Louisiana cuisine under the expert direction of our local Cajun cook, Judi Smith. Judi has assisted prize-winning cook Jackie Miller during the Cajun Week cooking class at Augusta. She also helped prepare fare for the traditional Mardi Gras celebration with Miller in Iota, Louisiana. In addition, Arts Center board member Gene Boyer will be preparing his reknowned “best gumbo in the North.”

Local musicians Judy Condon, Tom Hoffman, and Bob Smakula, better known as Zig et Zag, will provide music. All are long time Cajun musicians who have played with and studied under Cajun musicians at Augusta, in Louisiana and elsewhere.  There will be dance instruction throughout the evening for those who are new to the fabulous Cajun two-step.

Come warm up with spicy foods and dancing—just what you need for snowy February nights! Tickets are $30 per person and $10 for students, VISTA and AmeriCorps members and are available beginning January 8th in the Arts Center office and by phone at (304) 637-2355

WV Watercolor Society Member Exhibit Opening Reception Set for Friday

ELKINS—Thirty watercolor artists from throughout the state are participating in the West Virginia Watercolor Society (WVWS) All Member Exhibit at the Randolph County Community Arts Center in Elkins. An opening reception will be Friday, December 7 from 5-7 p.m. in the Great Hall of the arts center. The public is invited to attend.

According to Linda Elmer, WVWS president, “our exhibits are for watercolors only -- a form of painting that is challenging. But no matter what you like in art, you can find it in our exhibits. We have diverse interests. You can find portraits, abstractions, and plenty of West Virginia scenery.

Judge for the WVWS exhibit is Michael Doig who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from WVU and a Master of Fine Arts from the State University of New York, University at Buffalo. He is currently an assistant professor at Davis & Elkins College Art Department and an instructor at the Randolph County Community Arts Center (RCCAC).

The Jack Basil Retrospective Exhibit will also open December 7 in the Maxwell Room Gallery of the RCCAC and be on display through March 1. An Elkins native and self-taught artist, Basil began painting with oils when he was only ten years old. Basil is an avid hunter and fisherman and much of his artwork reflects his love of the outdoors. His award-winning paintings have been featured in the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Calendar and other publications.
