Betty Carr leading painting workshop at Arts Center
A four-day art workshop with artist Betty Carr, “Seeing Light as a Painter”, will be offered for intermediate to advanced oil and watercolor painters on Sept. 10 – 13 at the Randolph County Community Arts Center in Elkins. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each of the four days.
As a professional artist, Betty Carr has traveled extensively, gathering inspirational subject matter through her plein-air painting experiences. Carr is the author of the acclaimed instructional book, Seeing the Light: An Artist’s Guide, and her work has been featured in numerous books.
In her workshop, Carr will share her time-tested secrets for capturing the awe-inspiring qualities of light on canvas. Students will learn how to use light to create depth, form, mood and atmosphere.
The American Library Association described her book this way: “How can light create the illusions of depth on a 2-dimensional plane? How does rendering the subtleties of light suggest all-important mood and atmosphere in a painting? Well-known artist Carr provides a lavishly illustrated, step-by-step guide starting with, appropriately, learning to see … Using different lighting situations as full-color examples, she demonstrates refraction, gradation, and more, then analyzes compositional elements before even beginning the brushwork.”
Carr received her MFA from San Jose State University and has taught painting and sculpture for many years. She has been featured in Southwest Art, Art of the West, Workshop Magazine-American Artist, Watercolor Magazine, American Artist, International Artist and Art Talk. She was the cover artist for the Southwest Art magazine’s June 2010 issue. Carr is a signature member of Knickerbocker Society of Artists and Arizona Plein Air Painters.
She has received numerous juried awards as well as exhibited in major exhibitions and galleries throughout the country. Her paintings can be seen on her Web site, bettycarrfineart.com.
