The WV Wesleyan Jazz Ensemble, now in it's fifth decade, is dedicated to studying and performing historically significant works in the American Jazz and Big Band idioms.  The band is comprised of students from all majors and fields of study with about half of the members being non-music majors. As always it is our mission to share the beauty and triumphant spirit of this great African-American art with our students and our audience.  

The Afro-Cuban Ensemble, now in its sixth semester, studies historically significant musicians and works in the Afro-Cuban tradition, more frequently called Salsa.  The group learns the majority of the music by ear, and pieces together arrangements sometimes true to the records and sometimes altering them to fit their needs.  The repertoire covers rhythms including son montuno, bolero, cha cha cha, songo, mambo, afro, and danzon.   

Jazz musician, drummer and educator Kyle Andrews began playing in his hometown of Shepherdstown, WV and has since performed in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, New York City, and the greater North-Central WV area. He holds a BME from WV Wesleyan and a MM in Jazz Studies from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. He has served as a clinician and adjudicator in and around the state of West Virginia. His articles and reviews have been published in Modern Drummer Magazine. With interests and pursuits in both performance and scholarship, Andrews hopes to help students to not only perform at their highest possible level, but also to think critically about their relationship with music and the world around them.
