Interwoven: The Fiber Arts Legacy of Arthurdale

Interwoven: The Fiber Arts Legacy of Arthurdale

Arthurdale Heritage

Opening Reception is on January 24th, from 5-7PM.

Presentation/Lecture on February 7 in the evening, led by Elizabeth Saterfield, lead curator of the exhibition. More details TBA.

The Fiber Arts Legacy of Arthurdale showcases over eighty exceptional textiles created by Arthurdale homesteaders in Preston County, beginning in the 1930s as well as fiber artists in the region today. The exhibition also incorporates hands-on elements and demonstrations: learn how to card and spin wool, weave on a rigid-heddle loom, and feel wool, silk, and cotton fibers. “We are honored for the opportunity to feature so many historic textiles which have previously never been displayed,” says Elizabeth Satterfield, curator at Arthurdale Heritage. “The fiber arts are a perfect representation of Appalachian resourcefulness, creating something with your own hands that is both useful and beautiful.”

Fiber arts have been woven into the rich fabric of the Arthurdale community since its inception in 1933. Championed by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Arthurdale became the first New Deal homestead, establishing a pattern to be repeated across the nation. Focused on subsistence agriculture and cooperative industry, traditional Appalachian crafts such as weaving, furniture-making, and blacksmithing all became key elements of the project. For 90 years, generations of women have learned to weave across Appalachia— mentored by teachers, relatives, friends, and neighbors. The impact and value of their work is still seen today in the woven pieces left behind as well as the artistic skills demonstrated by their descendants.

This exhibit will be open to the public through March 5th, 2025.

Funding for this exhibition is provided by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through the Central Appalachia Living Traditions program.

Faith, Family, & Friends a solo exhibit by Holly Hinkle

Faith, Family, & Friends a solo exhibit by Holly Hinkle

My new show is “Faith , Family and Friends.”  I started with faith because it is a very important part of my life. Not second to that, but equally important are my family and friends.

I had the idea to do this series when I was going through a box of old black and white photos of my family. Many were my older relatives, some whom I have never known.  They  each have indirectly shaped me as a person and as an artist, so I wanted to honor them by painting some of my favorite images.

I have a love of the outdoors, and each image I chose included people interacting outside with others or animals.

Today in this fast-paced,  anxiety filled world most people spend so much of their time glued to their phones or computers, I think I am longing for the times I remember growing up . Back then family and friends got together often and connected in real time.  Unconsciously,  I chose images that show human connection and the enjoyment of being outside in the fresh air.

The artists that have most influenced my work are Matisse and Marc Chagall, but most recently as I have been working more in egg tempera, I have been influenced by the work of Robert Vickery and Andrew Wyeth. I admire all of them for their use of figures and the sense of narrative in their work. Matisse and Chagall have influenced my color palette, in the use vivid color. Occasionally I try to tone down the colors in my work , but inevitably it returns and I am embracing it.

Read more about Pam Roberts.
Artist Statement: I create with alcohol ink. I drop bright, vibrant colors onto an 99% alcohol painted polypropylene substrate. The ink moves in the direction it wants and with a little coaxing, it can be blown in a direction or with the force of gravity, it can drip and roll right off the page.

I compare painting with alcohol ink to carving. In carving, the foreground or main point of interest is left intact, while the edges and background are carved away. When painting with alcohol ink, I visualize something in the shapes formed by the ink, and then I darken in around the shape to bring the point of interest to the foreground. Using the concept of negative space brings the positive space into view. I find this a fulfilling and creative experience while letting ideas in my subconscious come to light.

During 2020, and in the few years that followed, I focused on abstract alcohol ink paintings. They ranged from A Spiky Virus, Seeing 2020, to A Black Hole, Worldly Imaginings, and other space related ideas. I traced stencils and then applied ink to make kaleidoscope-like designs in some paintings as well. Of course, painting would not be visually stimulating without the use of color. I like using the bright, intense colors that alcohol inks provide.

Watercolor is another medium that I enjoy working with. The wet in wet technique is especially fun and creates a loose, dreamy appearance. Building from light to dark in a painting is sometimes challenging, but solving problems is the task that I find interesting when painting.

Revisiting Penpoctura a solo exhibition by Kevin Woodcock

Art Reception is Friday, February 2, 2024, from 5 to 7 pm.

“I created these paintings and prints based on places I have visited in the area known to a few as Penpoctura. Penpoctura is a place made up of the four counties of Pendleton, Pocahontas, Tucker and Randolph. These counties contain some of the Monongahela National Forests most treasured areas such as; Spruce Knob, Seneca Rocks, Canaan Valley, Dolly Sods Wilderness, Cranberry Wilderness and my personal favorite, Otter Creek Wilderness. I often seek refuge from the daily world’s turmoil and troubles to be at peace in these places. I can focus on the simple joys of watching fish swim in a clear brook , looking at a waterfall or witnessing the sun light make the leaves glow green, red, yellow or orange. Penpoctura is a place to go to recharge your mental and internal battery so to speak. This place has given me so much inspiration to create artwork.”

D&E Senators Art Exhibition

The Art Department at D&E College present the work of art students from the current school year.

Art Reception is Friday, February 2, 2024, from 5 to 7 pm.

More than 39 Davis & Elkins College students will display close to 90 pieces of their creative works. The work is that of student art majors, minors and other non art majors taking general art elective classes. This exhibition features a variety of mediums. “All of our students work very hard to create what they see in their mind when they start working on their artwork. The process of making art involves creative thinking, daily observation and many practice drawings to work out the final outline of their idea. Sometimes that idea changes in the course of creating, and the students must figure out how to make their work adapt to those changes. Creating artwork involves lots of trouble shooting on the part of the creator to get it right,” Woodcock says. The Creative Art Program at D&E provides a basic background in art, problem solving and the creative process to all students. Students develop an understanding of complex and sophisticated visual language, and are prepared for a professional career in art, teaching art and/or graduate study. “ Kevin Woodcock
