Keeping up with The Arts Center

🐑 Meet Margaret Bruning, an adjunct professor of Art History at Davis & Elkins College. but that's not all! Keep reading to learn more about Margaret👇
🚜 "It turns out that my mother, Elena, was the first “farm to fiber” maker I ever met. She taught me to spin wool on the wheel I now use. Much of what I know about farming and fiber comes from her. When Mom passed, we moved her flock to WV, and I learned to do my best by them. Creating what I call slow fabric also connects me to a long legacy of Appalachian folk art all around us. On my mountain, I feel the some of the same challenges experienced by generations of those who came before. On hard days, I labor in the mud to keep my sheep alive. On slow days, I snuggle into their body, feeling their sweater-like fleeces warmed by the sun. With Mom watching over, I weave fabric on her vintage loom and never feel alone. 🧵
I hold a master’s degree in art history from Arizona State University, with a specialization in public art and contemporary craft sculpture. Prior to coming to Elkins, I had a 30-year career in arts administration commissioning monumental artworks and events for public agencies including Los Angeles County Arts Commission and Scottsdale Cultural Council.
🌄 Since moving to Elkins, West Virginia in 2017, I have been participating in weaving
demonstrations and exhibitions through Mountain Weavers Guild and twice participated the WV Humanities Folklife Apprenticeship program. In 2023, Central Appalachia Fibershed featured my work at the prestigious Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival in New York. I will be included in the forthcoming Museum of Fine Arts in Boston publication on knowledge transference in folk arts. My self-published books, Positive Ruminations and Sheep to Shawl and have been used by the WVU Textiles Department and WV Humanities Council" - Margaret Bruning, 2025.
🪡 Be sure to check out her fiber-art-skills, as well as her self-published books all about fiber arts, in the "Beyond the Syllabus," D&E Faculty Exhibition. Displaying in the Great Hall until September 17th!✨

👩🍳 You've tasted her delicious food, now it's time to relish in her artwork 🎨
✨ Chef Melanie Campbell is an Associate Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Davis & Elkins College, where she brings a dynamic blend of culinary expertise and creative passion to the classroom. A Certified Executive Chef through the American Culinary Federation, she began her professional journey as an apprentice at The Greenbrier and went on to serve as Executive Chef at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. At D&E, she has held multiple leadership roles, including General Manager, Innkeeper, and Executive Chef.
With a philosophy rooted in bringing creativity and joy to learning, Chef Campbell now focuses fully on enhancing the student experience through hands-on, engaging instruction in hospitality, tourism, marketing, and management. She believes the culinary arts are an edible form of artistic expression—one that marries technique with imagination. 😋🎨
🖼️ In recent years, Campbell has returned to her early love of visual arts, working in acrylic and watercolor. Though she pursued a culinary career, she also minored in art during her college years, studying under the mentorship of her art professor, Mr. Oldaker, who encouraged her to continue in the fine arts. Now, after years of painting privately for family, she’s sharing her visual artwork publicly for the first time—revealing another layer of her creativity and passion. 🤩
👀 Be sure to stop in the Great Hall to see Chef Mel's latest works in the "Beyond the Syllabus," D&E Faculty Exhibition. "Beyond the Syllabus" will display until September 17th. 💥

She’s been playing and performing for many years in such groups as Blues Fuse, The Elktones, Pam Roberts Trio, as well as several duos in West Virginia and Virginia. She enjoys playing old jazz standards with their colorful chords and she enjoys singing blues tunes where she can belt them out. Her repertoire includes folk and pop tunes, blues, and Americana. She was influenced by her mother who sang and played piano and loved to play the 40’s jazz tunes such as Autumn Leaves and Pennies from Heaven, along with many others. Pam is keeping those songs alive in her performances. Pam also performs her original songs from her CD which she recorded right here in the Arts Center! 🎶 🎸

👀 You might know her from your frequent outings to Beanders, but did you know she is also an extremely talented potter? 🪴
🤩 Desire Kniffen Watson is a ceramic artist who has been creating functional pottery since 2008, and teaching for the past 6-years. Her work often features themes inspired by her beloved home state of West Virginia, as well as natural elements like leaves, feathers, and flowing forms.
Desire is passionate about making pottery that people can use and enjoy in their daily lives. She also finds great joy in teaching - knowing the world becomes a more beautiful place each time she shares her skills with others. ✨
🌞 "I fall in love with summer and it's lush-green-beauty all over again each year," says Desire. "Pressing leaves into my pottery is my way of holding onto that feeling - a friendly reminder of summers' magic to carry me through the cold winters. 🚗 He can't give you an insurance quote, but he can tell you all about Classic & Antique cars. Meet Nicholas Altman! 🎨🚗
🤩 Nicholas Altman is a visual artist specializing in printmaking and illustration. Born and raised in Hong Kong, he immigrated to the United States in 2010. Nick has spent time
in Connecticut and Maryland, and he is a 2019 graduate from Davis and Elkins College
in Elkins, W.Va.
🌆 Having grown up in the city, Nick has been surrounded by cars his entire life. Nick’s attention is always drawn to cars, particularly classic and antique cars. He particularly likes the design characteristics in old cars, such as the sweeping lines and use of shapes, because they represent a time where automotive styling was simple and bold.
Nick's artwork showcases American cars from the era of leaded fuel and steel body panels; the days of less government regulation on safety and emissions. Between the 20s and the 70s the American automobile has gone through some distinct body style
changes which most should be able to recognize. With the advancement of our technology and increasing complexity of the society we live in, these old means of life are being phased out; but that doesn't mean there isn't beauty in them. ⚙️
Nick's artwork is on display in the "Beyond the Syllabus," D&E Faculty Exhibition in the Great Hall. This exhibit will display until September 17th.
✨ Come check out his work for yourself, in-person! ✨

✨ You know him, you love him, and if you don't, now's the time to learn more about the man, the myth, the legend; Kevin M. Woodcock ( @woodcockartproductions ). ✨
🖼️ Kevin M. Woodcock was born and raised in the suburbs of New York City. After high school he traveled to West Virginia to visit a friend and was attracted to the mountainous beauty of the state. Kevin moved to Morgantown where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking from West Virginia University. He met his wife, Mel, in Elkins through mutual friends. Kevin and Mel moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking at Louisiana State University. They moved back to West Virginia in 1989 and have lived in Elkins since 1992. Kevin creates his visual artworks at his home studio and at the Design Studio at Davis & Elkins College where he works as a full time Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the department. He teaches Screen Printing, 2D Design, Intro to Printmaking, Beginning Painting and Color Concepts, Advanced Printmaking, and Advanced Painting. Kevin is also involved with the ArtsBank Inc. Program of Randolph County. 🎨
🏕️ A lot of Kevins work is inspired by hiking and camping trips in the Monongahela National Forest of West Virginia. There is a sense of wonder he experiences that compels him to visually express the emotions he feels at some of these places. He says “ When a painting or print is going well I don’t think about my surroundings, I get into the piece as if I were there and lose track of time.” 🌄
👀 Check out some of Kevin's artwork in the "Beyond the Syllabus," D&E Art Faculty Exhibition. Displaying in the Great Hall until September 17th.

🏞️ If these paintings could talk… 🌄
well, they do! They tell you about the rivers, mountains, and skyscapes that shape the art journey of the incredibly talented, Marjory Moses (@marjmosesart). 🌞
Most of you are probably familiar with Marj’s metal-smithing, jewelry-making talents, but she doesn’t stop there. 💍
“Although I’ve been making jewelry for more than 15 years, my visual art has gone on in the background. I used to paint landscapes in a romantic-realism style, but the urge to abstract was always there, and I’ve been moving more and more towards a process that includes intuition+memory+gesture+layers of paint, charcoal, and oil pastel” - Marjory Moses. 🖼️

Testimonials
-
"As both a private citizen and the principal of a small private school in our area, I highly value the role of the Arts Center in our community. Having grown up in university towns, as a child I was accustomed to having access to various fine art events and activities. I want the same for my students, but unfortunately at a small school such as ours, we are not able to staff a fine arts department. For this and many other reasons, the Arts Center is of great value to our school and community.
- Cheryl Jacko, Principal of Highland Adventist School.
-
“The Randolph County Community Arts Center has woven itself into the fabric of our family’s life over the years. From summer camps to after-school art classes, both of my children have blossomed there—nurtured by creativity, fueled by imagination, and inspired by the magic of artistic expression. As an adult, I’ve also found my own creativity within its walls—whether shaping clay in pottery classes or crafting delicate ornaments. There truly is something for everyone. And what makes this place truly special? It’s the dedicated staff, woven seamlessly into our community, who consistently go the extra mile to ignite passion and kindle the flames of creativity in people of all ages."
- Kate Reed, Co-Founder and CEO of Wonder and Grow.
-
“The Randolph Arts Center holds a special place in my heart. Through their diverse programs and welcoming environment, I've discovered new mediums, interacted with local Creatives and formed lasting connections with those that appreciate the arts. As Pablo Picasso once said, "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." This quote resonates deeply with me, as the center has been a sanctuary where I can escape the noise of the world and enjoy the many works displayed in it’s numerous exhibitions throughout the year. The Staff is amazingly focused on its core mission of providing both a civic and community hub for open conversation and artistic expression. From amazing art workshops (many for children) to exciting gallery exhibitions, rousing concerts, exhilarating dance programs and monthly recitals, each experience at the Randolph Arts Center has enriched my life in ways I couldn't have imagined. I'm truly grateful for the endless inspiration and support it provides. All this is only possible through the graciousness and kind Patrons that support and enrich the Randolph Arts Center."
- David E. Clark

"Although I am involved in visual arts, I am aware of the variety of programs offered in music, children’s programs and more. As an artist, I have enjoyed participating in juried arts exhibits. The friendships made, the competition and the encouragement to continue to grow as an artist have been invaluable to me. Most recently I was able to display my paintings in the Maxwell Gallery in the fall of 2023. I had never had a solo exhibit and the Executive Director (Dani Cade) spent a lot of time helping me with everything from using the display system to providing advertising for the exhibit. A wonderful bonus was receiving the Best in Show Award in the Forest Festival Juried Exhibition. The Arts Center can provide generous monetary awards and qualified judges through their association with local businesses. For these reasons, more artists are participating from outside the local area in recent years. I was encouraged to enter my winning painting at the next level of completion online. My painting was awarded second place from five hundred and eighty international entries in the Dakota Pastels Quarterly Contest. It is the most prestigious award I have won and I owe that honor in large part to the Randolph County Arts Center."
- Teresa Mason, Artist.
-
"I have always enjoyed working with the Randolph County Arts Center here in Elkins. They have provided a great place for our student body to have Art Shows, Receptions, and a place where students in the elementary levels can get Art Classes provided when there is not Elementary Art in Schools. They welcome all and enjoy everyone's creativity as I have enjoyed teaching classes and taking classes there. I will continue to work with the Randolph County Arts Center now and look forward to teaching more there when I get older and have more free time to create my own works of art!"
-Ashley Richardson, Art Instructor at Elkins High School
-
"I feel that it’s important to have a place where the community can come together, participate in activities, and create friendships. That’s why I appreciate The Arts Center. It has provided a welcoming space where I can share my passion for all things art. I feel that the arts classroom is an integral part of community bonding which fosters positive community interaction, emotional support, and the exchange of community information. The bonds of friendship developed in the center build a strong, safe, and inclusive community."
-Jennifer Boyle, Art Instructor, Artist, Owner of Appalachian Glass
